Productivity from Boredom: Productive Ways to Fill the Time
By: Morgan McPhearson
No matter how cool your job is, there are bound to be moments of slight boredom. The question is: How can you use this time to advance your career? Here are a few ideas on how to best use your time, courtesy of the Daily Muse:
Research your industry. With the constant stream of information, it can be hard to keep up with everything that is going on in your industry. Take time to wade through the stream, suggests the Daily Muse. Keep track of what you find as you never know what information will be useful in the future.
Learn a new skill. Use some of your time to learn a new skill that can make you the go-to person at work. There a number of online resources, such as CodeAcademy and Coursera, that allow you to learn at your own pace for free.
Find new ways to be productive. Every job has tedious, time-consuming tasks that need to be done. Take some time to figure out how to use apps on your laptop or mobile devices to streamline these jobs.
Take time to reflect. Take a few minutes each day to write down what you accomplished and what challenges you faced. According to the Daily Muse, keeping a work journal can increase your self-knowledge and identify patterns and habits that help you and areas where you can improve.
Finding ways to maximize your time can be one of the intangibles that sets you apart at the office. As little as 15 minutes can be enough time to make a big difference in your career.
