The legal industry itself may be slow to change, but McDonald Hopkins has built a reputation as an innovative and entrepreneurial business advisory and advocacy law firm. With a more than 85-year history serving clients in and around Cleveland, McDonald Hopkins actively looks to the next generation of attorneys and professionals to help the firm evolve and grow. Right from the start, young attorneys at McDonald Hopkins are put in front of clients and given the opportunity to build their practice. The hands-on approach is different from the experience young attorneys get at larger firms – and it’s admittedly not for everyone. But self-starters who are bold enough to take charge of their cases and their careers early on thrive at the firm.
Young professionals at McDonald Hopkins are not without a safety net, though. The firm has a mentorship program that pairs new attorneys with a member outside of their practice area who meets with them regularly to field questions and offer career guidance. With business development coaching and public speaking workshops, McDonald Hopkins is invested in propelling young attorneys forward in their careers and in the community. There is also a Women in Leadership program and an Associate Committee, both of which give new and/or young attorneys a voice at the firm.
When it comes to firm culture, McDonald Hopkins has loosened their tie over the past several years. The Cleveland office has a business casual dress code that is accented by monthly “Jeans Days” to raise money for various nonprofits. Office happy hours, trips to Cedar Point and Progressive Field, and fun wellness initiatives, like a summer walking challenge, give all attorneys and staff a chance to step away from their desks and interact with their peers.
McDonald Hopkins also strongly encourages its attorneys and professionals to give back to the community by serving on local nonprofit boards or volunteering time at the Veterans’ Pro Bono Clinic, a program the firm founded in 2014 with the Legal Aid Society of Cleveland and the Veterans Administration Community Referral and Resource Center.
