E!C’s Rising Star: Barbara Lum
By Samantha Wright
A world traveler, Barbara Lum is a Cleveland transplant who has lived in the city over three years after having grown up in California. An attorney by trade, Barbara works at Thompson Hine LLP. She is also extremely involved in the Cleveland YP community.
In 2011, Barbara was selected to participate in the Downtown Cleveland Alliance City Advocates Program where she joined a fantastic group of young professions who shared a passion for Downtown Cleveland. Barbara was recently nominated President-Elect for the Board of Trustees for the Asian American Bar Association of Ohio, and she is also Director of Events for MotivAsians.
Barbara is very excited to be a young professional in Cleveland as the city is undertaking a transformation; she loves the excitement generated by the construction of new hotels, businesses, apartments and green spaces all over the city. She especially enjoys that she is able to walk to work in a matter of minutes and that her salary goes much farther in Cleveland than in other cities. Barbara is constantly discovering new spots to love in Cleveland and says her obsession with visiting the West Side Market has recently been supplemented by her new favorite spot: the urban garden next to her apartment building.
In the future Barbara is hoping that Cleveland will become more public transit-oriented and she would like to see more car-sharing options, like Zipcar, around town for those city-dwellers who don’t see the need to buy a car. Having said this, she thinks it is wonderful to see people using the Cleveland BikeRack and all the BikeBoxes popping up all around town, and the pedicabs downtown have also been a nice surprise.
Having lived and worked as a young professional in so many places before coming to Cleveland, Barbara is keenly aware of how many opportunities exist for young professionals to take on leadership roles in Cleveland’s professional and community organizations. She believes that there are real opportunities for young professionals to help decide the trajectory of professional and community organizations in Cleveland. These opportunities just do not exist in other markets.
