Employer Spotlight: American Red Cross
As one of the nation’s premier humanitarian organizations, the American Red Cross is dedicated to helping people in need throughout the United States and, in association with other Red Cross networks, throughout the world. The nonprofit depends on the many generous contributions of time, blood and money from the American public to support its lifesaving services and programs.
The American Red Cross of Northeast Ohio’s regional headquarters is in Cleveland and includes five chapters, serving 4.5 million residents across 22 counties. The organization is volunteer-driven as 90 percent of its workforce is volunteers. Throughout the entire region, its humanitarian services employ approximately 45 staff but engage over 1,500 volunteers.
The American Red Cross is working hard to engage young professionals as it believes they are crucial to the organization’s success and relevance in the community. Young professionals bring an energy and enthusiasm to the organization’s mission and their commitment to giving back makes them invaluable to the Red Cross. They are the next generation of leaders, and it is important to involve them in the mission of the Red Cross, so they may continue its legacy.
At the American Red Cross, both staff and volunteers enjoy a collaborative work culture committed to the diversity of its people, programs and services. The organization needs people who want to contribute their individual talents to help their neighbors locally, across the country and around the world. No matter whether someone is recent graduate or an experienced professional, if they share the Red Cross’ passion for helping people, they are encouraged to join the nonprofit for a rewarding and challenging career opportunity.
The American Red Cross provides many opportunities for professional development, both as an employer and as a volunteer organization. Flexibility and work-life balance are high priorities. The American Red Cross of Greater Cleveland recently launched a Young Professional Council, a dedicated group of mission-minded young professionals who support the American Red Cross through volunteerism, outreach and special events.
When you volunteer with the American Red Cross, you become a part of one of the largest humanitarian organizations in the world and can make a positive impact on your peers and in your community. Working with the Red Cross is an excellent way to make a meaningful difference in other people’s lives while maximizing your talents, learning new skills, improving your resume and meeting new people. There are many rewarding ways to volunteer with the Red Cross, whether that be through supporting its blood drives, working with its Services to the Armed Forces, being a part of the free smoke alarm installation program (“Sound the Alarm”) or deploying to a national disaster. There is a volunteer opportunity that will fit anyone’s interests and availability.
